Fall in South Carolina doesn’t exactly mean pulling the snowblower out of storage. 😂 Around the Lowcountry, we may still be running the air conditioner well into the season.
But after months of heat, humidity, heavy rain and summer storms, fall is actually one of the best times to give your home a little attention.
Here are seven simple things South Carolina homeowners can do now to help protect their homes and potentially avoid expensive surprises later.
1. Clean Those Gutters
Leaves, pine needles and storm debris can clog gutters quickly. Clear them out and make sure your downspouts are directing water away from your home’s foundation. We may not get piles of snow, but South Carolina can certainly give us plenty of rain.
2. Give Your HVAC Some Love
Your HVAC system has worked HARD through another Lowcountry summer. Replace the filter, clear leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit, and consider having the system serviced before you eventually make that magical switch from AC to heat.
3. Check for Moisture and Mold
Humidity doesn’t disappear just because pumpkin spice shows up. 😂 Check around windows, bathrooms, crawl spaces and underneath sinks for moisture, staining or musty odors.
4. Inspect Caulk and Weatherstripping
Take a look around exterior doors and windows. Worn caulk and weatherstripping can allow moisture and pests inside while making your HVAC system work harder.
5. Check Your Roof and Exterior
You don’t necessarily need to climb onto the roof. From the ground, look for missing or lifted shingles, damaged flashing, loose siding and tree limbs rubbing against the house. After summer thunderstorms and hurricane-season weather, your exterior deserves a good once-over.
6. Prep Your Outdoor Spaces
Clean outdoor furniture, check screens, clean the grill and trim vegetation away from the house. And because this is South Carolina, “preparing the patio for fall” doesn’t necessarily mean putting it away. We might still be sitting out there in November. 😂
7. Test the Boring but Important Stuff
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, replace batteries when needed and check your fire extinguisher. It’s not glamorous, but using the change of seasons as a reminder makes it much harder to forget.
