Momo Kitchen and Market-Best New Restaurant in Goose Creek!
So when I think of Goose Creek cuisine, downtown Charleston type of food does not come to mind. And, definitely amazingly affordable downtown cuisine in a cafe type environment in Goose Creek? You’re about to find the best new restaurant in Goose Creek--Momo Kitchen and Market!
This gem is hidden off of College Park Road in a tiny strip mall next to Wendy’s, just a quick jaunt off of I-26 toward Goose Creek, in the Crowfield area, about 10 minutes from Summerville.
Chef Justin Moore has definitely made an amazing menu here, bringing high end flavors to Lowcountry cuisine, right in Goose Creek! Momo’s will surprise your tastebuds, your eyes, your nose, and just generally make your day turn into the most amazing day ever!
SIDE NOTE: Allen was not with me today at the restaurant, so he happily accepted the leftovers. His opinions will be at the end of each mouthwatering dish he tried. Also, before you read, serious Kudos to Momo for making my husband actually like pimento cheese! Yay!
The ambiance
The ambience is cafe eclectic, with wine and ale tastefully lining the walls. There was a single TV over the bar for the guest who would want to catch a game or their fave show while enjoying a nice sangria.
Ryan, my server, was super informative, guiding me through the menu to make sure I tasted and showcased the Best of Momo’s!
The signature bev
The house “signature cocktail” isn’t a cocktail! The Sangria is really unique by every glass, and the main theme they change every day, so you can truly say that no two Sangrias are the same! My treat was a tasty fruit explosion that had me quenched in no time on this Carolina summery day!
Garnished with lemon, this concoction had a sweetness, but the tart from the grapefruit gave it the bite to be deliciously refreshing and thirst-quenching on this 90-degree day!
The flavors, I believe I got them all, included lemon. There seemed like maybe a splash of grapefruit, definitely strawberry, and the bubbles of the sparkling wine, mixed with the white and red were perfectly balanced! This lovely ruby colored beauty definitely won my heart.
The starters
Grilled Bologna Sliders
Who doesn’t love fried bologna sandwiches when they were kids? Seriously? These grilled bologna sliders are not from your elementary school Scooby Doo lunch box.
Sliced four high with bologna, the toast on the bun, combined with potato chips and pickles provide the crunch you need to spruce up any sandwich, and the flavors are perfectly complimented with just enough mustard. The caramelized leeks perfect this grown-up version of a grilled bologna sandwich, and make you close your eyes and just say yummmmmm with each bite.
Allen opinion: He agreed with me…it takes the grilled bologna from school lunchbox to the perfect adult version! He just wished they were bigger!
Deviled Eggs
When Ryan served the deviled eggs, he recommended that I place the pickled red onions on top, as that was the BEST way to eat them. He was so right! Without the onions, they were still beyond delicious. They have a sweet paprika that adds a nice smokiness to the egg mixture. The egg was seasoned perfectly, with a welcomed heavier mustard taste than the mayo taste of the more traditional egg. Why is this? The pimento cheese in the egg mix made it stand out from any other deviled egg that has passed through my lips. The bacon PERFECTLY compimented this little masterpiece, and the chives were a delicious addition as well. However, (thank you, Ryan), the picked onion truly made this a deviled egg masterpiece that should be revered.
Allen update: What is THAT in the mix? I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s DELICIOUS! Me: Pimento cheese (I didn’t tell him ahead of time, because he doesn’t like pimento cheese). Allen: Seriously? Pimento Cheese? (That was all he said as he went back to finish the other two).
The entrees
Shrimp and Grits
When you taste the shrimp and grits, close your eyes and experience the flavors. Seriously. I know this sounds a little over the top, but my emotions went crazy-I wanted to cry and scream as if I just had won the lottery of flavors! These were truly THE BEST shrimp and grits I have EVER tasted.
Everyone who knows me knows that I have been in search of the best Charleston Lowcountry Shrimp and Grits. This one zoomed to the top of the list, by a long shot, with no competition for a long time coming! Momo’s truly upped the bar on shrimp and grits, and I DARE anyone to try to beat it! Kudos, Chef Justin!
If you are looking for a LOT of flavor, choosing Momo Kitchen and Market Shrimp and Grits is the perfect selection for you! Side note: Thank you so much for taking the tail off the shrimp!
The smokiness of the first bite was a welcome surprise. The smoked paprika gave this version of the low country classic a beautiful twist. The surprise on this dish is the pulled pork, which is another crazy twist that Justin turned into perfection on this S&G dish. Garnished with chives and creme fresh, this just finishes the dish beautifully.
Side note on leftovers from Allen: What is THIS?! So many flavors, my mouth is going happy crazy!
Fried Chicken Sandwich
This is completely Allen’s review–I ordered this specifically for him:
A hearty piece of chicken breast. Not your slap a piece of chicken between a bun. The smoked pimiento cheese makes the whole fried chicken sandwich a brand new experience. The crust was beautifully crispy, not overly, just the perfect amount of crisp, and the spices were perfectly complementary to this sandwich. There’s so much going on here that you don’t know how to explain it, but it’s GOOOODDD!!!
Side: Cucumber-Tomato Salad
The cucumbers in this salad were crisp, the tomatoes were fresh, the vinaigrette was perfectly seasoned to compliment these veggies, and it was just the perfect accompaniment to the sandwich.
In conclusion
Overall, Momo’s is my new favorite, and it’s only about 15 minutes from my home! The ambiance was warm and relaxed, with a cafe vibe. The menu was simple, yet diverse, and we can’t wait to go back and try other items!
